Combined contraceptive pills for preventing pregnancy

Oral contraceptive pills, which have become one of the most popular contraceptive methods among women, work with the help of artificial female hormones present in them. The combination pills are the pills which contain two artificial female hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. The three most popular combination pills are Dianette, Cilest and Loestrin. Combination pills give you a three way protection against protection. These pills trick your body into believing that ovulation has already occurred, in order to stop the production of an egg. It also alters the womb lining and thickens the cervical mucus so that sperm cannot enter the womb.

Dianette is a combination pill that contains ethinylestradiol (oestrogen; 35 micrograms) and cyproterone acetate (progestogen; 2 milligrams) as its active ingredients. Cilest contains ethinylestradiol (oestrogen; 35 micrograms) and norgestimate (0.25 milligrams; progestogen) as its active ingredients. While Loestrin comes in the dosage strength of 20 mg and 30 mg, and so the 20 mg pill contains 20 micrograms or ethinylestradiol and 1 milligram of norethisterone acetate as its active ingredients. The 30 mg pill, on the other hand contains 30 micrograms of ethinylestradiol and 1.5 milligrams of norethisterone acetate as its active ingredients.

All these pills can be taken by women who are 18 years of age or above. But Dianette should be avoided by women who are pregnant, or are suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, have a history of stroke and are having circulation problems. Cilest should be avoided by those suffering from liver problems, heart problems, circulation problems, hypertension and are a smoker over the age of 35. Loestrin should be avoid by those heart, liver or circulation problems; have had stroke; or are having high blood pressure, varicose veins and are pregnant.
